Waxwork Released: 1988 Starring: Zach Galligan, Deborah Foreman, Michelle Johnson, Dana Ashbrook, Miles O'Keeffe, Patrick Macnee, David Warner, John Rhys-Davies review by Julia Marchese Waxwork is, in my opinion, an overlooked 80’s horror classic. Written and directed by Anthony Hickox, the film centers around four college friends who receive a strange invitation to a showing at a waxworks. In a big creepy house. At midnight. Hmmm… The always charming Zach Galligan stars as Mark Loftmore, a richie who just wants to have a good time. He’s joined by Twin Peaks hottie Dana Ashbrook as Tony, the bad boy, Michelle Johnson as China, the bad girl, and ubiquitous (in the 80’s at least) Deborah Foreman as Sarah, the virgin pure good girl…with an urge to be bad. They decide to venture into the dark house and see what this crazy waxwork is all about. You know the owner is up to no good, simply because he’s played by David Warner, great villain of the decade. It turns out Warner wants to rule the world (natch) by bringing the most evil characters of all time to life. All he needs is one human soul in exchange for a figure made of wax. So when someone feels like “getting a closer look” and steps into the scene, they actually experience whatever it is the scene represents. It’s a really fun concept and is executed really well. While maybe not the scariest or best written horror film, Waxwork is just a joy to watch. And it inspired Waxwork 2: Lost in Time, one of the craziest sequels ever made.
