10 Questions with... The Devil Rides Out
[Joey K - Vocals] 1. What bands did you listen to as a kid? Growing up my Dad always had a lot of rock'n'roll and country on his stereo - Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash and so on. I only spent every 2nd weekend with him but those 4 days a month left a big impression on my future taste in music. The first band I called my own though was KISS. I was obsessed with them in primary school. I had all the cassettes, the make-up kit, t-shirts, school bag, the lot. I gave my entire View Finder collection to a guy at school in order to be the one who got to play Peter Criss in a mimed KISS concert we staged at school one day. 2. What's the first concert you ever attended? I desperately wanted it to be KISS but I was too young when they came to Perth and I remember making a huge scene when Mum said I couldn't go. Didn't forgive her for quite some time after that... in fact, perhaps I never did! The first concerts I ended up seeing were when I was in high school. There was Midnight Oil, Steve Earle and Pink Floyd... can't remember which came first, was probably the Oils, they were my main high school band. The first really life changing ones though were Metallica/Kyuss, Faith No More and Rollins Band in @ 90/91. These 3 shows pretty much settled it for me. 3. How do you prepare for a show? Any specific things you do to get in the right headspace? On the way to the gig I will always pump something badass like Brant Bjork's 'Make the Pony Trot' or Slayer's 'Raining Blood' really loud on the car stereo to get the testosterone pumping. 4. Weirdest thing a fan has ever done at a show? A woman jumped up and started playing tambourine with us at one show. She wasn't bad either. On the tambourine that is. 5. What's the worst job you've ever had? I worked in a chicken manure factory over a summer school holidays once, that sucked pretty hard. It was in a huge metal shed piled high to the rafters with shit, no aircon, over 100degrees+ temperatures. Good times. 6. Favorite thing to do besides play music? Hangin out with my sons. Watching old cult and horror DVDs. 7. What's your favorite song ever - your 'theme song'? Fucking hell, that's a tough one - I can't possibly narrow it down to one, I have so many depending on where my head is at. 'I Walk the Line' by Cash. Nick Lowe's 'The Beast in Me', which was covered by Cash, is up there, an incredible song which I wish I didn't identify with so strongly. Nick Cave's 'Stagger Lee' or 'Papa Won't Leave You Henry' maybe. Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day'. Willie Nelson's 'Always on my Mind'. Tom Waits' 'Goin' Out West'. I'm sorry, I'll stop there... 8. What would we find in your refrigerator right now? Beer. Finding Nemo yoghurts. 9. If you could make mass produce a t-shirt with your own slogan on it, what would that slogan be? "Keep the dream alive". 10. If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be, and why? The ability to understand women. 10.5 Your MySpace and other website links: www.myspace.com/thedevilridesoutband
