10 Questions with... Darlings of the Day [Sterling Mire - Vox and James Goddard - Guitar] 1. What bands did you listen to as a kid? Sterling: I grew up listening to all kinds of music, coming from a musical family. My grandmother was big on Elvis--got into that quite a lot especially around 5 years old. My dad, who played in a popular Austin, Texas band influenced me by playing things like The Moving Sidewalks, The Pretty Things, The Move, Love, 13th Floor Elevator, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Zepplin--Those bands were ingrained in my head because especially back then, there was incredible band/artist loyalty so people would play records for years, the songs then had that kind of staying power. My mom was into anything that popped and rocked. She's who caused me to become a pop junkie...My Aunt got me heavily into singer songwriters like Cat Stevens, Harry Chapin, and Gordon Lightfoot...I still listen to quite a bit of these artists because their music never goes out of style and it was the pinnacle of outstanding, indisposable music. James: My Dad was a session sax player, so lots of jazz, the stuff that sax players like to listen to - I bloody hated it so I 'rebeled' by listening to Abba... Luckily I later got heavily into rock... phew. 2. What's the first concert you ever attended? Sterling: Michael Jackson, of course! James: Thunder in a civic center in Poole (on the south coast of England). The supporting band's drummer took the hi-hat off his kit and came out into the audience to do a 'hi-hat solo'. Someone kicked him in the nuts. 3. How do you prepare for a show? Any specific things you do to get in the right headspace? Sterling: Nothing really, the songs are always poised - ready to move from my lips to anyone who is ready to receive them. James: Couple of beers, make sure one of us has remembered to write a set list... no weird rituals I'm afraid. 4. What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever done at a show? James: Had some girl yell a request at me whilst we were playing a song - nice that she has a favorite and all, but I'm not a flipping play list... We occasionaly get some wierd shit in Europe - Oh, we did an acoustic gig in a cave in Austria last summer and someone came right up to the stage and started taking pictures of my knees. Odd. 5. What's the worst job you've ever had? Sterling: Taking care of the bedeviled version of the Brady Bunch kids. James: Worked as a cleaner at a dentist's surgery. Horrible, I'd get there at 3am after being out partying and have to scrape bits of gums and teeth out of the filters of the suction tubes. 6. What's your favorite thing to do besides play music? Sterling: Cover myself in jam and walk through crowded streets..no, write anonymous prose in public restrooms in addition to writing short stories, really! James: Pickling foods mainly. I have recently started pickling nuts in cider. My girlfriend LOVES it when I put my nuts in cider. 7. What's your favorite song ever - your 'theme song'? Sterling: "Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark And Hilldale" -Forever Changes (Love) James: You'd have to get me proper drunk to find that out - it's really embarrassing. 8. What would we find in your refrigerator right now? Sterling: Nothing. James: That's not entirely true is it? Her fridge is full of hot sauce from Taco Bell. Really. I'm in London right now so I have a couple of half eaten take-out curries. 9. If you could make mass produce a t-shirt with your own slogan on it, what would that slogan be? Sterling: "Dying To Live" James: "Lying to Dive" 10. What's the most exciting thing that's happened to you so far? Sterling: I don't know, I guess one thing that comes to mind is Leonard Cohen offering to pay my rent when I was out of work and down and out a few years ago and John Entwistle giving me a picture he drew of "Barry the Buzzard"... James: Ask me tomorrow. 10.5 Your MySpace and other website links: www.darlingsoftheday.com www.myspace.com/darlingsoftheday Facebook: darlings of the day
