Madonna collaborated with her 13 year old daughter, Lourdes, to launch their new line, Material Girl, a private label of juniors clothing for Macy’s that debuted early this month just in time for little fashionistas all over the country to buy clothes for back to school.
We sing-a-long to every word of ‘Like a Virgin,’ We even know how to vogue like there’s no tomorrow. So who better to teach us a thing or two about fashion than the original material girl herself and her fashion forward daughter who seems to really have some of that Madonna magic in her.
Most teens wouldn’t be caught dead in clothes their mothers designed, but thanks to the help of Lourdes, there’s nothing to worry about.
“I really didn’t do anything. I couldn’t say it was a collaboration. It was 90 percent Lola,” said Madonna.
Lola, as Lourdes is called, made sure the line, targeted at the teenage girl, had a fresh and young edge to the 80’s inspired looks that make up the first collection of the Material Girl line.
Madonna describes Lola as the, “much more fashion-forward and savvy,” of the two. The young fashionista has had a stylist since age nine, and credits her love of fashion to designer-to-the-stars, Stella McCartney, who has been known to knock out some one-of-a-kind pieces for her. Lately Lola’s been blogging about her love of fashion on Materialgirlcollection.com, playing up her new clothing line writing things like “I am totally obsessive about 80’s shorts. You know the kind that makes your butt look kinda big, with a grunge-looking shirt tucked in.” ….A fashionista after my own heart.
The looks of the line are definitely 80’s inspired. There are sleeveless biker vests, plaid shirts, floral print miniskirts, and even fingerless gloves that are reminiscent of Madonna’s classic 80’s looks that turned her into the fashion icon we know her as today. The line encourages layering, with lots of tutu-looking skirts and structured jackets in the mix. With a little bit of layering, a girly, yet edgy Material Girl approved look is easy to achieve.
Apparel is not the only thing in store for Material Girl, also look out for footwear, handbags, jewelry, and hair accessories too. And with the young teen in mind, the line that will be exclusively available at Macy’s, retails its prices between $12 and $40.
“Gossip Girl” star Taylor Momsen, was chosen as the celebrity face of Material Girl. Known as the young, fashion designer daughter of the show, Momsen seems like the perfect fit for the line. Despite recent controversy surrounding Momsen after her comment about sex toys, the ads she’s in are great and “very age appropriate and not overly sexual in any way,” commented celebrity stylist Philip Bloch.
Latest reviews of the line say that the pieces are not reminiscent enough of some of Madonna’s older iconic looks, but from sketches and photos I’ve taken a look at, the line appears very well done. There are enough hints at the iconic Madonna look without being too over the top, so young girls today can still get away with wearing some of the funkier pieces to school. The line is perfect for the back-to-school wardrobes for fashion-forward kids and I can’t wait to see what else Madonna’s trendsetting daughter has up her sleeve in the years to come.
