Arizona’s latest law, prohibiting ethnic studies in public schools, has caused quite a stir in the music world recently with dozens of artists ranging from fine-artists to musicians of every genre deciding to take a stand on laws infringing upon basic civil rights by forming Artists for Action/VivaArizona.org. The group, initiated by Arizona musicians, aims to offer support and resources for artists who want to speak out on the injustice and encourage dialogue around controversial issues such as race, ethnicity, and freedoms.
“We’re asking artists to take a stand, make their voices heard, and inspire fans to get involved”, says Joey Burns of Tuscon-based band Calexico. The organization will not only connect with non-profit organizations but will also coordinate rallies, special appearances, and benefit performances to encourage listeners to take a stand and will also work with artists to coordinate rallies, speaking engagements, and benefit performances. “We’re offering all kinds of methods for artists to get their fan base motivated,” said John Convertino of Calexico. Jim Adkins of Phoenix-based Jimmy Eat World, explains that “what Arizona needs now is support…And to help bring like-minded progressive voices back to Arizona.”
