It’s a cold, cold, night, but I have to head out to Beverly Hills to try and get an autograph for a dear friend of mine. She has the entire cast of Chasing Amy on her One Sheet except for Amy herself, Joey Lauren Adams. I need her on Dazed and Confused, but I’m not sure if she will be at this event or not. It’s a party for… wait for it… Party Down. Get it… party… for Party Down… It’s late and I’m tired so you must forgive the bad puns. Anyway, the cast of Party Down, including Mean Girl’s Janis Ian, I mean Lizzy Caplan, Will and Grace’s Megan Mullally, and a few Veronica Mars alumni are here as well, so off we go to Beverly Hills!
7:47 p.m. – I just got parked and am walking over to the event. Megan is coming with me, and I think she’s parking as well… Dude, there’s a Baja Fresh across the street! Ahhhh Baja….
7:52 p.m. – Megan just got here, it’s all quiet on the western front. There are a couple collectors inside, but not outside. I’m debating about sneaking in… hmmmmmm….
7:56 p.m. – There’s the sparkly Megan walking over… She really wants Joey Lauren Adams as well… I need Lizzy Caplan, but honestly the main reason I’m here is for that Chasing Amy poster… it is screaming to get finished… It’s saying, “Sign me!”
7:57 p.m. – Yes, I just said the poster was talking, and no… “I’m not crazy M’lyn, I’ve just been in a very bad mood for the last fifteen years.”
8:01 p.m. – We see someone walking down the street that could be JLA… It’s been a while since I met her last… I turn to Megan and she confirms the sighting… It’s Joey! I start getting the poster out, (one sheets are always a pain in the buttocks!) Megan walks over and asks for a picture. Joey does it, but doesn’t seem all that happy about it… Then I unroll the full poster, and ask her to sign it. Joey does it, and personalizes it, but then rushes inside. She did it, so at least it’s done but it wasn’t a “super friendly” experience… Ah well… the poster is complete! Whoo Hoo! I didn’t even ask her to do the DVD cause it looked like she wanted to take off… ah well…
8:03 p.m. – Megan just ran to put the poster and my bag in her car… God bless Megan!
8:06 p.m. – Of course I forgot my Party Down insert was in my bag as well… DOH!
8:09 p.m. – It’s a cold night… lol… oh wait… It looks like the event is breaking… cool!
8:12 p.m. – Oh, security is kicking out the other collectors that are waiting inside… Man, so much for sneaking in…
8:17 p.m. – I just met Mike Gets Around reader John! Such a cool guy, and we’re chatting now about the Party Down cast event. He told me Lizzy is sick, which is never a good omen for being able to get her to sign… great. He said the panel was pretty good though. He also said how much he likes the column, which is always a good way to get on my good side! LOL… It was great to meet you John!
8:26 p.m. – Ummm… So Jesus is walking by with Col. Sanders from Kentucky Fried Chicken… and wait… they came from Baja Fresh. Jesus, who we always see at the Baja Fresh in Hollywood where we always eat… is now in Beverly Hills? I mean what are the odds?
8:29 p.m. – They are walking towards us, and Jesus is starting to converse with us. He asks where Megan is from and of course as soon as she starts to speak it’s clear she’s from New York. Lol, Jesus said, “Awesome man!”
8:34 p.m. – I wanted Jesus to bless us, but the Col. Was there… I was hoping he could rustle us up some chicken… or maybe Jesus could bless a small chips and salsa and make them into a large… now that’s a skill…. Or a blessing… Or a MIRACLE! Mmmmm Salsa…..
8:45 p.m. – Martin Starr just came out and signed a few things. I got him on my Adventureland mini poster. I really loved that movie. I know a lot of people hated it, but I think it will be remembered as a classic!
8:47 p.m. – Megan said the rest of the cast was going to follow Martin but then they stopped and left out the back… dammit!
8:54 p.m. – Okay everyone is gone now… Man that sucks! We can see inside the building, so we’re keeping tabs on the cast… lol…
8:59 p.m. – I tell Megan we should walk around the building, so we’re off… We’re passing the event building, the parking garage, and I discover an ally behind the building.
9:02 p.m. – We’re slowly skulking down the ally, and we spot the entire cast hanging out smoking… But there is security… Sigh…
9:05 p.m. – There are five collectors here now… The security tells us he’ll ask them if they want to sign. Security guards are always on such power trips, so it’s like dude, really…You’ll ask them? But you’re a security guard!
9:07 p.m. – So Adam Scott comes over and signs a few things, which was really cool of him to do. I again forgot my Party Down insert in the car so I didn’t have anything… I always feel like, oh go get it, but as soon as you do… BAM! The person you want leaves… so I always say, “eyes on the prize…” Go for who you really want…
9:11 p.m. – The cast just went inside again… grumble… so we’re heading back to the front…
9:22 p.m. – We just discovered there are two events for the same show happening back to back… oh crap we are in for a long long night… sigh…
9:25 p.m. – A couple cast members are coming out… Ken Marino who was Vinny Van Lowe on Veronica Mars and Ryan Hansen… apparently, Ken’s wife is hungry and they are trying to go to… wait for it… Baja Fresh to get her some food. Lol… I got a pic with Ken on the way over… Such a cool guy!
9:34 p.m. – Baja was closed so apparently Ken ordered take out… lol…
9:36 p.m. – Ryan came by with a few friends. He stopped for a pic with me and Megan. I told him about my love for Veronica Mars and said they need to make the movie. He said, “Sure I’ll tell Kris…” and laughed. I was like, “Yeah you do that.” In my head I’m like who the fuck is Kris? Lol…
9:40 p.m. – It’s getting really chilly now… sigh…
9:43 p.m. – The cast is still milling about inside… man… There’s no one in there though… Random… Oh wait, it looks like they are all watching a feed in the viewing room… Thank God for all this glass!
9:53 p.m. – Oh Kris is Kristen as in Kristen Bell! DOH! I’m a little slow sometimes… lol… Megan is laughing at me now…
9:56 p.m. – Megan just regaled me about how many times she has tried to get a picture with Megan Mullally, lol… We are determined to get them tonight! Megan and Lizzy will sign! LOL…
10:04 p.m. – The second party has now started… man, I didn’t expect this…
10:10 p.m. – Matthew Perry just arrived… huh? LOL… And me without my Friends flat! Dammit! He’s not a jovial guy… but Megan just got a picture with him.
10:14 p.m. – Ahhhh he’s, from what we can tell, dating Lizzy Caplan… ah, I get it now…
10:22 p.m. – I’m trying to take some pictures inside the party through the glass but they’re not really coming out too well. Ah well…
10:34 p.m. – Joey Lauren Adams is coming outside to smoke a cigarette… One of the other collectors asked her to sign once she finishes… she says, “Sure.”
10:39 p.m. – Joey comes right over to us and Megan gets her on her DVD cover, I get her on Dazed and Confused, and she is really impressed that the poster has everyone else on it. She’s impressed by that but not by the one sheet? Really. Ah well… She’s definitely friendlier on the second go around…
10:41 p.m. – Okay every cast member has come in and out of the party except the two we need. Lol… At least we know they are a friendly cast… lol…
10:43 p.m. – Lizzy has her jacket on now… Yay… She could be leaving…
10:47 p.m. – The town cars have pulled up in front, so at least we know that Lizzy is being picked up in front because her car has a sign that says Caplan on the inside window. So much for being stealthy…
10:48 p.m. – Lizzy’s jacket is off now… dammit!
10:49 p.m. – Adam Scott is getting ready to leave… I think the party is ending soon, because we were told it ends at 11:00 p.m.
10:51 p.m. – Lizzy has her jacket on now… Yay… It looks like she is making her way out the door… Nope she is hugging Adam Scott…
10:54 p.m. – Lizzy and Adam are still talking… Megan Mullally is still just chilling inside. My Megan just said, “It looks like she’s about to belt out a show tune.”
10:59 p.m. – Okay it looks like Adam is going to leave… Lizzy just hugged him… again.
11:01 p.m. – They are all still chatting…
11:07 p.m. – The staff inside are taking down the signs for God sakes!
11:14 p.m. – Oh look more hugging!
11:16 p.m. – Adam Scott is leaving now…
11:19 p.m. – We heard the coordinator say that Lizzy will not be needing her car… Uh huh, cause she’s going home with Matthew! Hello!
11:20 p.m. – Matthew Perry just left, he signed a DVD for a collector.
11:21 p.m. – The door opens a crack, literally this is torture! The other collector asks Lizzy through the door if she would mind signing a couple autographs. She says, “Sure.”
11:23 p.m. – Matthew pulled the car up, and Lizzy comes out. I have my Mean Girls poster out and she says, “Wow, now this is some old school shit!” lol… I ask her to write, “To Mike-You’re too gay to function!” LOL… She laughs and says, sure. I love that quote from Mean Girls… Then security comes out and starts yelling at us. He says, “You guys need to leave! You can’t be here.” Lizzy turns to him and says, “Whoa dude we’re all friends here, it’s cool!” Then the security guard tells Lizzy, “You need to get to your car.” We all just kind of look at him like he’s crazy and he walks inside. What a douche! Lizzy then signs my Hot Tub Time Machine poster and I got a picture with her. She was so nice!
11:31 p.m. – Megan and I just realized our parking structures might close at Midnight… She takes off to move her car. I’m keeping an eye out for Megan Mullally. Then I start to think… Shit, I need to move my car… I don’t want to be trapped in Beverly Hills… that sounds like a tagline for a bad B-movie… “Trapped, in the land of the rich, pretentious, and plastic, he claws for life…”
11:35 p.m. – The other collector takes my DVD cover and I run down the street… because I always park blocks and blocks away…
11:39 p.m. – I make it to my parking structure and go down to P3 where I was parked… Well, there is not one car to be found… so I run up the ramp to level two nothing… then level one… nothing… I have no car, I’m carless…
11:40 p.m. – Then I remember… Wait, I’m no floor three not P3… shit… I run down the ramp to the elevator… Suddenly my phone starts playing “I Kissed a Girl” which means Megan is calling me, I grab the phone out of breathe, Megan’s like, “Where are YOU!” I’m like I’m in the bowels of the parking structure, I lost my car, and I have pay, then the phone cuts out…DAMMIT!
11:42 p.m. – I’m on floor three… There’s the car! Thank God for the panic button!
11:43 p.m. – I’m in the car… I’m trying to pay…
11:44 p.m. – The parking lady does not understand why I am in a hurry… for the love of Karen Walker hurry up!
11:45 p.m. – I’m now flying down Beverly Drive… I hear the familiar refrain of Katy Perry again… Then I pass the two lone fans in front…
11:46 p.m. – I do a U-Turn in the middle of the street and grab the parking spot right in front…
11:47 p.m. – I’m out of breathe and jumping out of the car… Megan’s like… “Mike, where were you?” I’m like, don’t even…
11:49 p.m. – Megan Mullally is talking with Martin Starr, and they hug goodbye… Megan Mullally is with her husband and walking downstairs… she parked in the structure. We all yell for her, but she doesn’t hear us… My Megan says, “No, I’m not losing her again!” She takes off running down the street, yelling “Come on Mike!” I’m trotting behind her, realizing I need to condition more cause I’m out of breathe and chanting “for the love of Karen Walker, for the love of Karen Walker” … We go down the parking structure ramp… thank God there isn’t any security… We hear the elevator bell ding and Megan walks out…
11:50 p.m. – We ask Megan M. if she would mind signing, she says sure! She walks right over, and says, “I thought I heard you guys in the front and came back over but you were gone already.” My Megan says, “Cause we were running over here.” I tell Megan M. that My Megan needs a picture, and she is so sweet and says, sure! My Megan gets a picture, and then I get a picture and my DVD signed.
Then I tell Megan I heard she was thinking of doing a Karen Walker stage show… She says, “Well you know I did all this press but don’t have anything lined up or written.” I say, “On the behalf of fans everywhere you have to do it!” She says, “I’d like to do it before I’m 90!” lol… she was so sweet! And we are so tired! We climb out of the parking structure and decide to take in a nice nightcap at Norm’s. Sigh… This was an eventful night to say the least! Lol…
