For a relatively new band [they started in the beginning of the year, literally] Good Old War has a sound that is far beyond their youth. In a town where music weighs heavily on peoples lives, it’s depressing to see the youth run around the streets in what our culture has molded new music into. The popular bands now are 90% filler and 10% fashion. It seems like a joke most of the time, when will I wake up from this nightmare?
All of these bands record albums with top producers and make millions. It’s all about presentation now, I guess. I long for the bands that actually did their homework before turning in their projects. It’s not just about presentation but preparation. These lazy bands are made up of mediocre musicians with flat ironed hair and tacky clothing, their music s heavily produced, almost to the point where it’s practically impossible to recreate what they made in the studio on a live stage. I often feel jaded by this, except for the night I saw Good Old War. Upon hearing them a light bulb went off, finally an inde band that kids can get into that doesn’t suck. They really are a breath of fresh air, they cleanse the pallet. Just by listening to this folky, indie rock trio you can tell they did their homework. They listened to the greats, actually learned to play their instruments and make their music because they enjoy it.
The Troubadour was packed but not necessarily for Good Old War [this time] although the previous band and even the headliner recommended them to the packed house of teenagers. Their set was strong right from the get go and almost instantly they captured the attention of weary teens in their skinny jeans and fluffy hair. Soon they had the place clapping in unison to their tunes and smiles appeared on young faces. This band, Good Old War is just what the youth of America need, a simple good band that plays good music.
