Amy Sedaris, the gifted writer, actress and comedian stopped by the Barnes and Noble at the Grove to sign her new book titled “I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence.” Amy is probably best known as Jerri Blank from “Strangers With Candy” but her book is a must read, mixing crafts, humor and recipes together. I, of course, was running late but still managed to catch a place in line for the signing.
7:00 p.m. – I just got to Barnes and Noble. There are about 50-70 people here. Everyone is lined up against the wall, and there are about 50 people seated. Apparently, there is going to be a Q and A, a reading, and then a signing. I brought my Strangers With Candy DVD set to get signed.
7:07 p.m. – I had to buy one of the books to get a wristband to stand in line. I figure I can give it to my Mom for Christmas. She would actually really like it I think. This is a very interesting crowd. I’m not fond of Barnes and Noble signings. They are mean and have a tendency to be really militant.
7:09 p.m. – There are two Twinkie boys in front of me, and they keep making out, and pawing each other. I’m cool with PDA’s but dude… you can chill. Still, thank God we live in a country where Twinkie boys can make out with one another in public. Oh yeah… VOTE NO ON PROP 8.
7:10 p.m. – There’s actually a passage in Amy’s book about how to wash your Vagina. Hmmm would my Mom really like this…
7:11 p.m. – A guy just walked past me with green pants, red shoes and a purple shirt. God love Los Angeles fashion.
7:15 p.m. – The Barnes and Noble staff are actually being friendly… Hmmmm… I don’t trust them.
7:16 p.m. – I may be reconsidering the above statement about the Twinkie boys, and being thankful that they have the right to make out in public. Dude(s) get a freakin room.
7:17 p.m. – A strange blonde guy is staring at me from across the Barnes and Noble. Of course this is the signing I come to alone. Sigh…
7:22 p.m. – A woman with a see through white shirt and a purple bra just walked by. Apparently, she’s quite chilly.
7:24 p.m. – I am so far back in line, I can’t see the Q and A. Sad times.
7:32 p.m. – She’s late! Sigh…
7:33 p.m. – Yay, she just came in!
7:36 p.m. – Amy is demonstrating a craft with google eyes and panty hose. She is too freakin funny!
7:42 p.m. – The Q and A has just started. A woman wants Amy to cut her hair… What was I saying about Los Angeles? God Bless it.
7:43 p.m. – Amy is actually cutting the woman’s hair…
7:50 p.m. – Amy just said that she doesn’t have any plans to revisit Strangers With Candy anytime soon. But she will not rule it out.
7:54 p.m. – She still has the fat suit from the first season of Strangers With Candy!
7:59 p.m. – Last question… It’s about google eyes… no seriously, it’s about google eyes…
8:05 p.m. – The signing started. The people in the front chairs are going first.
8:22 p.m. – I have not moved… Amy is so sweet. She is taking so much time with each person. This is great, but… time consuming and I have a concert to get to! Grrrr….
8:44 p.m. – I finally moved! From what I can gather is that they let everyone in the front go, and then moved the line where I was. That sucked. It made it feel so much longer than it was.
8:55 p.m. – I’m almost there, Amy really is taking time with everyone, and is really sweet.
9:09 p.m. – I just met Amy! She signed my DVD and also signed my book. I told her the book is for my Mom for Christmas and she drew a Christmas tree inside for her. So cute! I got a picture with her as well. Such a fun day. It’s always great when a person you admire is down to earth and sweet like Amy. I would also check out her book, “I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence.” I was flipping through and it really is a great read!
